Responsibilities
- Deliver direct nursing care to patients admitted to the observation unit, including post-ED admissions and trauma overflow, with attention to changing acuity.
- Conduct ongoing assessments, monitor vital signs, administer medications, start IV therapy, and implement treatments per unit protocols.
- Recognize clinical changes, escalate to the multidisciplinary team promptly, and coordinate with ED, inpatient units, and ancillary services.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record; ensure charting reflects assessments, interventions, and patient outcomes.
- Collaborate with physicians, case managers, and other team members; participate in care planning and daily rounds; adapt care as patients transition through observation or hold status.
- Ensure safety and infection control compliance, support patient and family education, and comply with holiday staffing expectations.
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience in an acute care setting, with observation unit or similar fast-paced environment preferred
- BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications required; TNCC preferred
- Ability to work in a fast-paced observation unit and float to other areas within competency as needed
- Willingness to work holidays as part of the assignment
- Strong documentation, critical thinking, and communication skills; ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams
