Responsibilities
- Provide intraoperative nursing care as circulating and/or scrub RN, ensuring sterile technique, instrument handling, and accurate sponge and instrument counts throughout procedures.
- Assist with a broad range of specialties, including ortho, uro, oncology, general surgery, ENT, dental, plastics, neuro, CVT, and trauma; operate and troubleshoot surgical devices and equipment, including Da Vinci Robotics when applicable.
- Monitor patient status intraoperatively, assist anesthesia as needed, manage sterile field integrity, and respond to intraoperative changes to support patient safety.
- Document perioperative care and outcomes in the electronic health record (EPIC) and ensure clear handoffs to the post-anesthesia and postoperative teams.
- Adhere to infection control standards, patient positioning safety, and unit protocols; maintain readiness of the OR for upcoming cases.
- Participate in scheduling flexibility and on-call responsibilities: one weekday call per week plus one 24-hour call in each four-week schedule block; collaborate with the unit to meet patient care needs.
- Ensure all required circulator and scrub skills are current and appropriately demonstrated, with prior travel experience and a strong OR background.
Requirements
- Licensure: Active Registered Nurse license valid for practice in the assignment state (VT) or eligible for VT licensure.
- Certifications: BLS (Basic Life Support).
- Experience: Minimum 2 years of OR experience; experience in a large trauma level 1 environment (500+ beds) is required.
- EMR: Epic experience within the past 2 years.
- Skills: Strong circulating and scrub capabilities; proficiency across OR subspecialties including general surgery, ortho, uro, oncology, ENT, plastics, neuro, and trauma; comfort with Da Vinci Robotics and other surgical technologies.
- Travel: Prior travel nursing experience required.
- Additional: Must have reliable transportation; public transportation is not available in the area; vehicles should be equipped for winter conditions (snow tires recommended November–April). Circulate and scrub skills checklists should be included in your packet.
- Schedule flexibility: Must be able to adapt to day/evening rotations; pattern typically involves multiple shifts with an off day, and a need to meet unit and patient care demands.
